There are forges for metal studding, jewelers' workshops for encrusting, and craftsdwarf workshops for bone, cloth, and leather decoration. Dining and bedrooms will be at bottom, then workshops followed by stockpiles on top. Pig tails and leather are pulled from the center for clothing and other goods. It pulls in stone from exploratory mining to be whittled down and sold to other civilizations to get it off the map, while bars of a specific type fill the crafting areas. The top two areas are for finished goods (stone, wood, and bone crafts/ammo/furniture on the left, and metal crafts on the right). The stockpiles will constantly be refilled with ore from exploratory mining, and furniture and weapons moved away after completion for trading (crappy quality), rooms, or traps/military. This section, like all of the outer hub sections, has a burrow designated only for the smelters and forgers in this area, with dining and bedrooms between the stockpile (top) and workshops (bottom). Here are the smelters and forges for weapons, armor, and furniture. The right grey area (next to the volcano) is the metalworks area. This is also the central hub for Trade Depot goods and stockpiles that (t)ake from the other areas, as well as dining and bedrooms for the hauler burrow. Here, food is grown, cooked, brewed, butchered, and made into Lavish Meals. So now I am working on this design, in a 3x3 embark rather than a 4x4 (otherwise it'd be more symmetrical. My last fort ran into serious FPS drag at around 140-160 dwarves, even though I had minimal tasks to complete, and part of this problem was the schizophrenic, ad-hoc fortress layout I had- tons of stockpile dragging, overhauling, so on and so forth.
